For the development team that venturing into a fresh territory after so many years in the original setting presented an ideal situation to work with an untouched location within the game world. We hadn't extensively covered Ohio in the game's history extensively, explained the development lead. From our existing territory, if you head eastward, you start approaching the Washington DC area. That area is quite familiar. The Ohio territory was touched on extensively. So, this installment being set earliest in the series history provides us multiple creative opportunities. We decided to explore what's occurring in Ohio! Drawing Inspiration from Previous Games What immediately stands out about the game's version of this new territory is that it's designed as a desert wasteland. This could appear unexpected given the real-world location of Ohio, but there's a strategic rationale for this artistic direction: The appearance was significantly drawn by Fallout 3 and New Vegas. The direction I instructed the developers when we began working on the new region was: It requires dry regions, dangerous monsters, and numerous raiders. From my perspective, that represents what Fallout 3 and the Vegas title are all about. Those are the fundamental aspects that define the characteristic feel of those titles, and so I aimed to have that mirrored here. Television Series Incorporation The success of the Fallout television series generated a noticeable surge in community activity for the online game, with accounts indicating a multiple times engagement boost. The development team recognized they needed to utilize this situation, but lacked the necessary time to execute a full crossover right away. The approach came through logical evolution when the team discovered the perfect connection with Walton Goggins' character, who functions as a mission providing vendor within the new expansion.
