The UK Foreign Office has added eleven further countries to its official alert register regarding the dangers of industrial alcohol poisoning from contaminated spirits.

This revised travel guidance covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to evidence showing "a worldwide rise in the frequency of reported cases" of methanol poisoning.

Only a few weeks ago, authorities had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing list, after a number of high-profile events including the tragic demise of six visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in permanent eye damage or death within twelve to forty-eight hours.

What is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Utilized?

Industrial alcohol is a poisonous substance commonly utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. It is not intended for drinking.

While it is inherently formed during the creation of spirits, reputable manufacturers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the refining procedure.

But in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and scentless, it is very difficult to notice.

Government Guidance for Travelers

Government minister Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should recognize the signs of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"While drinking spirits abroad, stick to well-known venues and avoid local brews or complimentary drinks," the official advised.

"If something feels off, for example a fatigue that's way worse than typical or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor right away."

The entire register of destinations identified as carrying a threat of industrial alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
